Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico Shot and Critically Injured; PM Modi Expresses Shock

An assailant shot Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, injuring him with a bullet. He was hospitalized and underwent surgery, which he survived, according to the most recent sources. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed outrage at the tragedy, saying, “Deeply shocked at the news of the shooting at Slovakia’s Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Robert Fico. I strongly condemn this cowardly and dastardly act and wish PM Fico a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the people of the Slovak Republic.”

Fico is currently in serious condition and fighting for his life in the hospital. The attack took place in Bratislava, where several shots were fired at him in a tiny town. Slovakia’s Defence Minister, Robert Kalinak, stated that the surgery lasted more than three hours. The incident occurred while Prime Minister Fico was greeting people outside a cultural community center after a government meeting. A man in the front row raises a gun and fires five times at the prime minister, before being apprehended by Fico’s bodyguards. Fico was then moved to a car by security agents, then airlifted to a neighboring hospital before being transferred to another in Banska Bystrica. While security services have not confirmed the assailant’s name, unsubstantiated media sources indicate he is a 71-year-old writer and political activist.
