Devastation Unleashed: Cyclone Remal Leaves Trail of Destruction in Northeastern States

At least 37 persons have died as a result of Cyclone Remal’s intense rain and thunderstorms, and many more are still unaccounted for. The most of the destruction was in Mizoram, where hundreds of people sought safety in rescue camps as houses were demolished and electrical lines were toppled. There have been 27 reported deaths in Mizoram’s capital, Aizwal, and search operations are still on to find those who may still be missing. A State Disaster Relief Fund of ₹15 crore and ₹4 lakh as an ex gratia for the deceased have been announced by Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

The impact of the cyclone in Assam resulted in four confirmed deaths and eighteen confirmed injuries, including a school bus tragedy in the Sonitpur area. The deployment of NDRF crews and underwater drones for search and rescue operations followed reports of four fatalities and substantial property damage from Nagaland. Two people lost their lives and more than 500 were injured in Meghalaya, where the cyclone’s constant rain caused damage to many dwellings.

Although there were no casualties in Tripura, 746 people were forced to take shelter in relief shelters due to heavy rainfall. After making landfall in West Bengal and Bangladesh, Cyclone Remal severely disrupted daily life in the impacted districts and caused extensive power disruptions. Significant power outages occurred in West Bengal and India, depriving lakhs of energy.
