Aizawl Tragedy: Ten Lives Lost in Quarry Collapse After Cyclone Remal

Share

Following Cyclone Remal, disaster struck Mizoram’s Aizawl region when a stone quarry collapsed amid heavy rainfall, killing ten people and trapping numerous others under debris. Authorities have initiated a search and rescue operation, but work is hampered by inclement weather, including constant rain, according to Anil Shukla, the Director-General of Police.

Schools have been suspended as a precaution, and government employees have been directed to work from home owing to traffic disruptions caused by landslides on multiple highways and major roads. Notably, Aizawl is shut off from the rest of the country owing to a landslide on National Highway 6 near Hunthar. In response to the catastrophe, Chief Minister Lalduhoma convened an emergency conference to evaluate the situation and coordinate rescue operations.

Cyclone Remal, a violent cyclonic cyclone, made landfall between West Bengal and Bangladesh, causing substantial damage such as the demolition of fragile homes, uprooted trees, and downed power lines. Before its arrival, authorities evacuated nearly one lakh people from West Bengal’s most susceptible regions.

The weather service has issued warnings of continuous exceptionally heavy rainfall in Assam and other northeastern states in the coming days, aggravating the difficulties of rescue and recovery operations.
