Share

Thane:

Thane municipal police have intercepted and confiscated illegal weapons ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, including 33 firearms and 179 sharp weapons such as knives and machetes. This move is consistent with the Election Commission’s directions, which have resulted in greater vigilance in the Thane Police Commissionerate since the adoption of the election code of conduct. The crackdown, which spanned the Commissionerate from Kopri to Badlapur, included all wings of the crime section and police stations. The seizure aims to prevent potential violence and maintain a calm political process, as these illicit weapons could be used to influence voters. Licensed firearms are also being collected to ensure peace and order during the election period. The police have indicated that investigations are underway to determine whether the recovered guns were engaged in unlawful possession and trafficking.

In addition to the guns, the police seized an unexplained Rs 8.98 lakh in cash from private vehicles at several locations, including checkpoints put up during naka bandi operations. Liquor and raw materials worth Rs 37.1 lakh have also been seized thus far. The police urge anyone with information on the possession of weapons to notify it immediately.
