“Matilda The Musical”: A Spellbinding Journey on Mumbai’s Stage

Share

With summer vacation started, now is the perfect time to watch the uplifting and amusing story of a five-and-a-half-year-old genius on a Mumbai stage. Inspired by Roald Dahl’s popular children’s novel “Matilda,” the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) acclaimed production, “Matilda The Musical,” is playing at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) Grand Theatre until June 2.

Roald Dahl’s 1988 classic “Matilda” is the whimsical story of a tremendously clever young girl who is neglected by her parents and oppressed by her despotic school administrator. Matilda navigates her tough surroundings with her telekinetic powers and bright mind. The RSC’s theatrical adaption has received several accolades and delighted audiences worldwide.

From the moment the audience enters the theatre, they are welcomed by a stunning set created to resemble a library, symbolizing Matilda’s refuge from her inattentive parents. The musical features a brilliant cast who excel at singing, dancing, somersaulting, and performing acrobatics. A very noteworthy moment has Matilda’s classmates exhibiting their swinging abilities.

While the visual components of “Matilda The Musical” are outstanding, it is the fascinating tale that captivates the audience. The presentation effectively captures the loneliness of a little girl who is unloved by her parents yet adored by her librarian, teacher, and peers. Matilda’s telekinetic talents, carefully reconstructed from Dahl’s original text, provide a sense of surprise and magic to the story.

The RSC began work on this musical in 2003, with a creative team that included author Dennis Kelly, director Matthew Warchus, and musician-composer Tim Minchin. After considerable rehearsals and development, the musical opened in November 2010 at the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

This acclaimed production comes to NMACC after the success of great international musicals like “The Sound of Music,” “West Side Story,” and “MAMMA MIA!”.
